Oregon

Oregon’s Baltic diaspora took shape during the post-World War II refugee movement, though Estonian families began to arrive in Portland in the 1920s. The community remains concentrated in the Portland area, and has grown in recent years, culminating in the opening of honorary consulates for all three Baltic states.

Culture

Estonian: While the Estonian community in Oregon may be small compared to some other states, it is vibrant and welcoming. With Oregon's proximity to major West Coast tech hubs such as Silicon Valley and Seattle, but a culture that is more akin to Estonia's, Oregon represents an intriguing destination for Estonian startups looking for a presence on the West Coast. The Portland Estonian Society has anchored the community since its foundation in 1951, almost as long as the Estonian folk dance group Tulehoidjad that has performed polkas, waltzes, and circle dances since 1950.

Latvian: The Oregon Latvian society serves as the hub for Latvians in the state, operating out of the Oregon Latvian Center in Portland. The center runs the Oregon Latvian school, teaching language, songs, dancing, and art to children ages 2 to 13, and hosts church services, garden festivals, and other Baltic celebrations. The Society also provides humanitarian aid to Latvia and works to preserve traditions among descendants in the Pacific Northwest.

Lithuanian: Portland's Lithuanian community centers on the Portland Lithuanian-American Community organization and the Lithuanian Language School Atžalynas. The Lithuanian Wayside Shrine, designed in 1962 by Lithuanian-American architect Jonas Mulokas and located inside The Grotto hilltop sanctuary, honors Lithuanian martyrs and victims of tyranny and stands as one of the state's most prominent Baltic landmarks. The folk dance group Aitvaras and various regional Baltic gatherings and holiday markets are frequently co-hosted with the Latvian community at the Oregon Latvian Center.

Academia

Study abroad programs in Latvia are hosted by the University of Oregon as a semester-long program with ISEP.

Diplomacy

In January 2025, Portland opened an Estonian Honorary Consulate, marking Oregon’s first official Estonian diplomatic representation.  Portland is also home to an Honorary Consulate of Lithuania.
