Kentucky

Kentucky maintains connections with Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania through cultural exchanges, collegiate athletics, agriculture, and international trade. Although the Baltic-American population is small, Kentucky’s economic relationship with the EU and Baltic states provides an important foundation for these ties. In 2025, the state exported approximately $12.2 billion in goods to the European Union, with aerospace manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, and industrial products contributing significantly to transatlantic commerce.

Culture

Although Kentucky does not have formal Baltic cultural organizations that gather across the state, residents connect with the Estonian Cultural Society of Cincinnati and the Kentucky Lithuanians Facebook group to maintain traditions. The Estonian Honorary Consulate in Cincinnati maintains a jurisdiction over both Ohio and Kentucky, providing a connection for Estonians in the Commonwealth.

Kentucky is home to approximately 2,665 residents reporting Lithuanian ancestry, with the largest concentrations in the Louisville area and Northern Kentucky. The community maintains informal connections through social networks and local gatherings rather than a centralized statewide organization. Lithuanian-born artist Ben Shahn also has a historical connection to Kentucky. During the Great Depression, Shahn documented rural life in towns including Smithland and Jenkins through photographs preserved in the Library of Congress. His work remains part of the historical record of Kentucky's communities during the 1930s.

One of the largest connections between Kentucky and the Baltics is the athletes that visit to play sports for Kentucky’s university and professional leagues. Estonian basketball player Kerr Kriisa joined the University of Kentucky Wildcats for the 2024-2025 season, bringing international visibility to Estonia through one of Kentucky's most prominent athletic programs. The University of Kentucky also announced the recruitment of Latvian tennis player Rihards Neimanis in September 2026, with plans for him to join the Wildcats in January 2027. Omar Prewitt, a native of Mount Sterling, Kentucky, signed his first professional contract with Lithuanian club BC Šiauliai in 2017. Similarly, former University of Louisville basketball player Steven Enoch joined Rytas Vilnius for the 2024-2025 season.

Economics

In June 2024, ten agricultural representatives from the Baltic states visited Capstone Farms in Henry County, Kentucky, through the U.S. Department of State's International Visitor Leadership Program. Organized locally in partnership with the World Affairs Council of Kentucky and Southern Indiana, the visit facilitated exchanges on sustainable livestock management, animal welfare, environmental regulation, and agricultural innovation. Estonian agricultural representatives, including government official Kadri Kaugerand, exchanged insights with Kentucky farmers about livestock health monitoring and sustainable farming practices, establishing professional connections between the region and Kentucky's agricultural sector.
