Indiana

The state of Indiana is home to over 3,500 Americans with Baltic heritage, with the majority being Lithuanian Americans. Despite its size, the community remains active through cultural organizations such as the Indianapolis Latvian Community Center, the Estonian Society of Indianapolis, and Lithuanian-American groups that organize language classes, folk dance groups, and traditional church services. The Indianapolis Latvian Community Center serves as a hub for Baltic events, hosting Latvian Independence Day celebrations, holiday markets, and cultural performances. Lithuanian Hoosiers, many of whom trace their ancestry to post-World War II refugees and earlier immigrant waves, maintain active social groups that organize commemorations and educational lectures about Baltic history. Annual cultural gatherings, such as the Midsummer festival in Indianapolis, draw together Estonians, Latvians, and Lithuanians for traditional bonfires, singing, and folk dancing.

Culture

Indiana's connection to Estonia centers on academia and historic diaspora communities, most notably through Indiana University's unique language programs and past local congregations. While Indiana does not have a massive modern Estonian-American population, it is the primary academic hub in the United States for studying the Estonian language and culture. IU is the only university in the United States that regularly offers three full levels of academic Estonian instruction through its Department of Central Eurasian Studies. In addition, summer language workshops offer intensive first-year and multi-level Estonian courses, frequently participating in the Baltic Studies Summer Institute (BALSSI) to teach practical communication and cultural competency. Historically, Indianapolis supported localized Baltic heritage groups, including the historic Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church of St. Paul and cooperation via regional networks alongside local Latvian and Baltic communities. 

Indianapolis was and continues to be the home of one of the largest Latvian diaspora populations.  The Latvian Community Center is a facility on the north side of Indianapolis that is home to the Latvian Church, Latvian School, Jautrais Paris dance group, Latvian Choir, and plays host to many different events and celebrations. It is also home to the Lithuanian, Estonian, Swedish, Polish, Czech-Slovak, and Scottish associations that hold their events at the center. Indianapolis is the only city that has hosted 3 Latvian Song and Dance Festivals in 1956, 1988, and 2007.  

Indiana’s Lithuanian community is centered primarily in Northwest Indiana's Calumet region and the resort town of Beverly Shores, driven by historic migration from Chicago. Key focal points include the American-Lithuanian Club of Beverly Shores and local cultural landmarks like Lituanica Park. Beverly Shores is known as part of the “Lithuanian Riviera” because its sand dunes and pine trees on Lake Michigan resemble the seaside resort of Palanga in Lithuania. About 12% of the town's population holds Lithuanian ancestry.

Diplomacy

Indiana’s Baltic diaspora has also played a vital role in fostering international ties. Honorary Consul Andris Bērziņš was instrumental in establishing Carmel’s sister-city partnership with Jelgava, Latvia, in 2022, strengthening cultural and professional exchanges. Estonia and Lithuania have also engaged Indiana through diplomatic outreach and business connections. In 2024, Estonia’s Ambassador Kristjan Prikk visited Indiana University Bloomington for an Estonian Independence Day celebration, emphasizing cooperation in education and technology. The university also provides resources and programs related to Estonian culture and language. Lithuania maintains ties through its Honorary Consul General, based in Ohio, who oversees outreach to Indiana’s Lithuanian-American community.

Economics

Indiana’s trade relationships with the Baltic states continue to develop, particularly in pharmaceuticals and advanced manufacturing. In 2021, Latvia’s Ambassador Māris Selga met with Governor Eric Holcomb to discuss expanding economic cooperation and strengthening business ties between Latvia and Indiana. Meanwhile, Indiana-based Eli Lilly, a major player in the pharmaceutical industry, maintains distribution networks in Lithuania. Indiana representatives have also engaged with Baltic trade forums, including the Three Seas Initiative Summit and Business Forum in Riga, a platform aimed at strengthening transatlantic investment in energy, transport, and digital infrastructure.
