Alaska
Alaska’s Baltic community is small and dispersed. Baltic connections to Alaska date back to the period of Russian America, when Baltic Germans from the Russian Empire’s Baltic governorates played important roles in the exploration, administration, science, and maritime activities of the colony. Latvia and Lithuania maintain honorary consular representation in Alaska.
Culture
Estonian: Alaska has a very small Estonian-American community, with roughly 110 Estonians living in the state. With no major Estonian cultural institutions, heritage is primarily maintained through individuals and family connections
Latvian: Alaska’s Latvian-American population is similarly small, with heritage maintained primarily through individuals and families. The community is largely represented by individuals and families. Notable Latvian-American figures include marine biologist, writer, and poet Eva Saulitis, who spent much of her career studying Alaska’s marine environment. The University of Alaska participates in the ISEP (International Student Exchange Program) network, which partners with the University of Latvia in Riga and offers opportunities to study Baltic languages and related subjects.
Lithuanian: The community’s most prominent cultural institution is the Little Lithuanian Museum & Library in Chugiak, near Anchorage, established in 2021 by Lithuanian-American educator Svaja Vasnauskas Worthington. The museum preserves books, artwork, textiles, and family heirlooms and provides a gathering place for Lithuanian heritage activities. Lithuanian heritage is also reflected in Alaska’s geography, including the Walatka Mountains in Katmai National Park, named after early Alaskan bush pilot John Walatka, whose father was a Lithuanian immigrant.
Military
The Alaska Army National Guard has deployed personnel to the Baltic region as part of NATO support and U.S. European operations. In one deployment, about 80 soldiers from the 297th Regional Support Group were stationed in Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and Poland for nine months under Operation European Assure, Deter and Reinforce. The unit provided logistical and administrative support to U.S. forces and NATO allies.
